I am a photographer who lives and works in the York area. I’ve produced work in many different areas of photography in both contemporary and fine art styles. I now tend to work to themed projects, having noticed that working to this method encourages me to develop a more acute perception and better level of observation in the particular area or style that I happen to be working on.
Polaroid Dreams
This is a selection from a portfolio in which I've tried to create images which are intriguing enough to engage a viewer's imagination and encourage them to create their own narrative. This has resulted in a body of work consisting of candid shots, often of people with indeterminate intent, which has lent the images an enigmatic quality.
Other images are of small isolated figures in the cityscape and landscape whose body language suggests being lost in thought and I want these images of small figures in a larger frame to suggest the issue of momentarily being in touch with a world bigger than ourselves.
The images are all digital and I've used several visual devices such as atmospheric lighting and unusual Polaroid colour casts to make them more visually intriguing and to introduce a moody and sometimes a strange dream-like quality in the style of cinematic noir. A balloon floating, a hot summer's day, a shadow on the wall... One of the most intriguing comments by viewers is that these images have created a feeling of déjà vu.
